When should I visit a Sleep Medicine specialist?
You’ll need a referral from your doctor to get a sleep test. We then review the referral, and some of our sites require you to attend a consultation before testing. We want to make sure you get the education you need, and that testing is indeed appropriate.
Ask your doctor for a referral for a sleep test if you:
- Snore or gasp for air while sleeping
- Regularly have a hard time falling or staying asleep
- Feel excessively tired during the day, even if you’ve slept the night before
- Have difficulty performing your daily activities because you’re too tired
What is a Sleep lab, and what is Sleep testing?
If your Sleep Medicine provider wants you to complete sleep testing, you will most likely spend a night at the sleep lab or if appropriate could have portable equipment set-up for evaluation in your home. Sleep labs refer to a medical space where sleep testing takes place. A sleep test is noninvasive and takes place in a comfortable, bedroom-like environment. We use state-of-the-art equipment to monitor your sleep patterns, breathing, body movements and heart activity during sleep. How do I request a referral?
If you have questions or would like a referral, talk to your primary care provider. Referring providers can submit a patient consulation request via EPIC. Providers that do not use EPIC should fax a referral request along with any related records to (217) 383-4372.
