Neonatal Intensive Care Unit/Level III Perinatal Services

Carle Level III Perinatal Services help high-risk mothers and newborns. If your baby is born early, with birth defects, infections, breathing difficulties or other conditions, our specially trained neonatologists will give your baby the best care possible in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). We also care for little ones who need to be transferred from other hospitals.

What We Treat

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
As the only hospital in the region offering Level III Perinatal Services, Carle neonatologists, obstetricians, nurses and other experts  staff our 48-bed NICU 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our 10,000-square-foot unit gives families privacy and comfort. We also provide a lounge for families and space for "rooming-in," where parents can stay overnight with their babies to transition to caring for them before heading home.

Serving more than 500 babies per year, our NICU staff uses state-of-the-art equipment and diagnostics to continually monitor and treat newborns. Whether your baby stays with us for a few days, weeks or even months, we understand the NICU can be a scary place. Our team will work closely with you to care for your child and answer any questions you may have.

NICU and Maternal Transport Team
Carle transports premature and critically ill newborns to our Level III NICU via air and ground ambulance. Our NICU transport team features highly trained nurses and respiratory therapists who specialize in neonatal care.

Carle also transports high-risk expectant and new mothers. Our transport team is specially trained to continue medication and treatment during transport. When expectant mothers are not stable enough to be moved, the NICU transport team travels to them for the safest possible delivery.

All transport teams are on-call 24/7.
