Maternal Fetal Medicine
At Carle Foundation Hospital, our Maternal Fetal Medicine team is available to provide the diagnosis, treatment and management of high-risk pregnancies. MFM Specialists - or perinatologists as they are sometimes called - are OB-GYN physicians who have additional training in the management of complicated pregnancies.

You may be referred to an MFM specialist is you have a pre-existing medical condition prior to pregnancy, develop a medical condition during your pregnancy, or have problems during delivery. Our MFM specialists are trained to care for all issues that arise, and are there to help our mothers have healthy pregnancies and safe deliveries.

- First and second trimester serum screening
- Genetic screening, testing and consultative services
- MaterniT21 testing (noninvasive cell-free fetal DNA testing)
- Targeted ultrasound
- Biophysical profile
- Fetal Doppler assessment
- Nuchal translucency, or sonogram of fluid under the skin behind the baby’s neck to assist with identifying chromosomal abnormalities or cardiac defects
- Fetal echocardiography
- Genetic amniocentesis
- Amniocentesis for fetal lung maturity
- Palliative care
